Autumnal

There's a feeling of autumn in the air. Cooler nights and golden brown foliage foretell that the seasons are turning and with the clocks changing this weekend the dark evenings are with us again! Such short days to get the outside work done!
The grass which has kept on growing because it has been so wet and mild needs cutting for a final time before winter arrives, all the potatoes are up and stored, beans are coming to an end now and will need taking up so the next years rotation, the autumn sown onions can be planted. We are picking excellent brassicas, including autumn cauliflowers, and the kale is fabulous this year.
Seed has been saved from all our heritage tomatoes for next year and from all the beans and peas.
This year we resolved to grow lots more in the polytunnels for winter and early spring production and we have already sown mangetout peas, spinach, winter lettuce and oriental salad leaves, carrots, broad beans and dwarf french beans. Our weather patterns, altered as they are now by climate change, make it increasingly difficult to achieve results outside due to cold, wet and sunless conditions, which in turn affects the pollinator insects (which are already suffering from pesticide poisoning!) and without the indoor crops we would be unlikely to be able to grow enough produce! A very sobering thought!!

Putting the garden to bed!

Now is the time when we clear the raised beds of most of the summer crops, harvest the autumn produce, do a general tidy up and then mulch the beds with cardboard, grass clippings and Ecosci (green waste compost)  for the winter to keep them healthy and as weed free as possible until next spring.
There has been far less to store this year than last year! Neil has yet to lift the last 2 varieties of the main crop potatoes, but being blight resistant Sarpo varieties they are looking good and we hope to have a good amount to store over winter!
Tomatoes are still struggling in this cold wet weather, and we are unlikely to have many apples for pressing into juice as the best will be stored in the specially made racks in the shed. We are still picking raspberries which have been quite good and the figs are a treat at this time of year too.
Planning to make more use of the polytunnels next year as a back up against the possibility of another poor summer. Nothing's easy!!

Challenging conditions
I don't like spending all my time moaning about the weather but.............
for growers everywhere this has been a particularly challenging season so far!
With little or no sun, insufficient warmth and just so much rain the outdoor crops are really struggling to get going. The peas and beans have been worst affected with the slugs giving them a really hard time, it looks like we will have to resort to replanting the runner beans inside the poly tunnel if we are to get any kind of crop this year. Everything is late particularly the cabbages, kale and cauliflowers, the only things which are doing reasonably well are the salad crops, which once you can get them to a certain size don't seem to be too affected by the attention of the small grey slug invaders!
The strawberries are trying their best, but the wet is a real problem and makes harvesting very difficult.
We are just so lucky to have the poly tunnels, as without the backup of some mange tout, broad beans, dwarf and french beans, along with the wonderful self seeded carrots finding enough vegetables for the restaurant would have been mighty difficult!

Great day had by all!

How lucky were we with the weather on 4th June for our first organic farmers' market here at Bangors! The rain was lashing down on the Sunday and on the Tuesday but the Monday was glorious and we could not have been more pleased. Attendance was good, the organic cafe was busy and everyone had a good day. Our next event is scheduled for the end of July hopefully the 29th July with another on the bank holiday weekend on Sunday 26th August. You can see lots of fab pics of the June event on our Facebook page here

Open Day and Farmers' Market 4th June

The latest development at Bangors Organic is now about to be revealed in the guise of The Big Green Shed! This will be a large covered area within an existing building, newly adapted for use as a farmers' market. The first event will be on Monday 4th June and owners Neil and Gill are really looking forward to welcoming you to their home and garden. Several local organic producers will be there, including Providence Farm, Cottage Farm, Elmar Vegetables, Helsett Farm and Wooda Farm and there will also be a Bangors Organic stall with bread, biscuits and cakes.

The market and gardens are open for visitors from 10a.m. to 3p.m. and Neil will be on hand somewhere to 'talk gardening'.

The organic café and tea room will also be open from 10a.m., serving coffee and cake, light lunches (such as home made pasties with fresh home grown salad) and traditional cream teas with yeast splits, jam and cream.

Bangors Organic at Poundstock near Bude has been running now for very nearly 10 years. Since restoring their Victorian house in north Cornwall, Neil and Gill Faiers have been providing luxury accommodation - but with the added bonus of a fully certified organic breakfast, Bangors House being the first such enterprise to certify all food served through the Soil Association organic certification scheme. So new was the concept in 2003 that the Soil Association needed to decide on the correct title to use - and thus 'Bed & Organic Breakfast' was born.

The organic gardens have been developed steadily over this time with much tree and hedge planting in evidence, both for aesthetic as well as practical windbreak purposes!

The vegetable garden is worked on a raised bed, no-dig system, using a 5 year rotation of crops. Two polytunnels and a traditional lean-to greenhouse are incorporated to protect tender plants, extend the seasons and to raise seedlings. Now fully established with a thriving eco system and a healthy living soil, the gardens get steadily better every season, producing a huge variety of different vegetables, salad and fruits each year.

If you would like any more information about visiting or are an organic producer interested in having a stall at the market, contact Gill on 01288 361297 or email info@bangorsorganic.co.uk

Easter Time

As ever the weather plays tricks on us all! Baking hot March followed by a cold and blustery Easter. Still, don't let that put you off coming down to the lovely, wild north coast of Cornwall this spring. We have availability for April and some still for May. The hedgerows and wild flowers are fabulous in May and everything looks so fresh and vibrant. Blow away the city cobwebs and recharge your batteries!!

Lots to do and eggs too

There is always loads to do at this time of the year on a smallholding what with clearing up in the garden, preparing beds, sowing seeds, and planting but this year with the new shed and plans for the Big Green Shed markets and events project too its been particularly hectic. At least the wonderful weather has been a help, as we have been able to get outside and onto the garden. However like everywhere, we too have had almost no rain for weeks and the clay soil has already begun to crack as it dries up! Not so on our raised beds though, they have been mulched and are in great condition and warmed up by the sun, the seedlings will shoot off in them!
The Call ducks have laid hundreds of eggs but in spite of my best efforts with a camoflage net they are not convinced they should be sitting on their nests, so I have taken 20 eggs and they are now in the incubator and hopefully we will get some chicks by about 21st April.

Busy Spring !

Its been the most fabulous warm, dry and sunny few days. Neil has got all the second early spuds in and done more work on preparing the other beds. Gill has made a big batch of Seville marmalade ready for all those breakfasts and is now going to get on with a load more seed sowing.
The ground is really dry, don't think I can ever remember the top field, where our pony Flicker lives, not being muddy in March!
New shed is looking great, Now just got to get insulation finished so that we can get 'The Big Green Shed' cleared and ready for its new floor.
The call ducks must have laid 100 eggs between them in several houses in the hen pen, so I need to get up the camoflage nets so they feel secure enough to sit on their nests and hatch them out!

Live and Kicking

Well our new site is now live, thanks to Paul, it is still work in progress but we will be working on this over the next few weeks. However, I can now update our news on a regular basis and spring special offers will be appearing very soon.
Neil has been very busy on the new shed and it is all coming together really well now, its going to be great!
Garden chores have been rather put to one side but we will have to concentrate on them now or there won't be any lovely produce for the summer. I have started to sow and the tomatoes are all up and looking very healthy.

Friday, 20 January 2012

We are really looking forward to 2012! Lots of exciting plans are already underway, the new gardening shed is part built and should be completed before Easter. This will mean we can get the Big Green Shed farmers market sorted out spruced up and ready for this summer's events.

We have planted a new Rosa Rugosa hedge in the car park along with a soon to be beautiful Mountain Ash tree. Next job is to plant the native hedging along the new post and rail fencing in the paddock.
This will be the second post... the wind turbine is all up and running.. its fab!

It can produce more than enough power to run the house, and does it really quietly too..

How We Started

Bangors Organic is a 5 acre horticultural holding and is one of only three Soil Association certified B&B's in the UK. Using almost no fossil fuels in the garden or the house we seek to offer eco friendly, sustainable food production and accommodation, with an 11kw wind turbine providing energy to the house and Neil providing most of the energy for the gardens.
Ideally placed a mile from the coastal footpath on the spectacular north Cornish coast, with Widemouth Bay surfing beach close by, and Tintagel, Boscastle and Bude just a short drive or bus ride away. We can provide safe storage for surfing gear and bikes
The carefully restored Victorian house has 2 spacious ensuite rooms with large windows overlooking the gardens and the cliffs towards the sea, antique beds and enormous luxurious bathrooms with freestanding baths and separate showers. There is also a guest's sitting room with BT vision Freeview and recorder, DVD player with a large collection of DVD’s for you to enjoy, books, guide books, maps local information and bus timetables. Guests have access at all times to a free Wi Fi service.
Dinner is available most evenings in our small licensed organic restaurant, using all our own freshly harvested produce. The organic gardens are extensive and fully stocked all year round with delicious seasonal vegetables, salads and fruits.
Comfort is assured with underfloor heating throughout the house powered by electric from our wind turbine, with any imported energy being 100% renewable electricity from Good Energy We also offer free electric for guests’ electric vehicles from our onsite car charging point.
We look forward to welcoming you to our home.
