Challenging conditions
I don't like spending all my time moaning about the weather but.............
for growers everywhere this has been a particularly challenging season so far!
With little or no sun, insufficient warmth and just so much rain the outdoor crops are really struggling to get going. The peas and beans have been worst affected with the slugs giving them a really hard time, it looks like we will have to resort to replanting the runner beans inside the poly tunnel if we are to get any kind of crop this year. Everything is late particularly the cabbages, kale and cauliflowers, the only things which are doing reasonably well are the salad crops, which once you can get them to a certain size don't seem to be too affected by the attention of the small grey slug invaders!
The strawberries are trying their best, but the wet is a real problem and makes harvesting very difficult.
We are just so lucky to have the poly tunnels, as without the backup of some mange tout, broad beans, dwarf and french beans, along with the wonderful self seeded carrots finding enough vegetables for the restaurant would have been mighty difficult!
