The latest development at Bangors Organic is now about to
be revealed in the guise of The Big Green Shed! This will be a large covered
area within an existing building, newly adapted for use as a farmers' market.
The first event will be on Monday 4th June and owners Neil and Gill are really
looking forward to welcoming you to their home and garden. Several local
organic producers will be there, including Providence Farm, Cottage Farm, Elmar
Vegetables, Helsett Farm and Wooda Farm and there will also be a Bangors
Organic stall with bread, biscuits and cakes.
The market and gardens are open for visitors from 10a.m. to 3p.m. and Neil will be on hand somewhere to 'talk gardening'.
The organic café and tea room will also be open from 10a.m., serving coffee and cake, light lunches (such as home made pasties with fresh home grown salad) and traditional cream teas with yeast splits, jam and cream.
Bangors Organic at Poundstock near Bude has been running now for very nearly 10 years. Since restoring their Victorian house in north Cornwall, Neil and Gill Faiers have been providing luxury accommodation - but with the added bonus of a fully certified organic breakfast, Bangors House being the first such enterprise to certify all food served through the Soil Association organic certification scheme. So new was the concept in 2003 that the Soil Association needed to decide on the correct title to use - and thus 'Bed & Organic Breakfast' was born.
The organic gardens have been developed steadily over this time with much tree and hedge planting in evidence, both for aesthetic as well as practical windbreak purposes!
The vegetable garden is worked on a raised bed, no-dig system, using a 5 year rotation of crops. Two polytunnels and a traditional lean-to greenhouse are incorporated to protect tender plants, extend the seasons and to raise seedlings. Now fully established with a thriving eco system and a healthy living soil, the gardens get steadily better every season, producing a huge variety of different vegetables, salad and fruits each year.
